Why German is easy

Why German is easy discusses the core aspect of how I managed to hack German grammar and vocabulary in just three months.

How to stop seeing German as hard

I am very much against the idea of languages being “hard”. This concept alone and believing in it is the barrier that holds so many people back from making any progress. It is also the reason that I didn’t do well in German in school. It was just too “hard” for me and I barely even passed my end of high-school exam in German.

Despite that, in just three months of a second attempt I passed the majority of the German C2 exam from the Goethe Institut; one of the most challenging language exams in the world for non-natives. The main reason I was able to make such fast progress in German this second time round is because I was extremely optimistic and would only ever see how easy German was.

Yes, German has cases and three genders and strange words and irregular plurals and a weird word order… and many other things that make it “hard”, but I analysed each one of these and reframed them to make them easy. This guide is that re-framing and in-depth explanation for many of what beginner to intermediate learners of German consider the “hardest” parts. After reading this guide, German will seem way easier! With this new attitude, you’ll be speaking it in no time :)

If you are currently struggling with German or wish you were making faster progress, this guide will be for you!

Who should buy this guide, and who shouldn’t?

  • If you are looking for a German course, you won’t find it here. In Why German is easy I presume you have already learned at least a little German and were intimidated by it. I present concepts you would already know of, but perhaps not understand well enough to apply. This discusses the “hard” aspects, but skips a lot of the less challenging grammar so that just the most important information can be provided.
  • If you are a perfectionist and making mistakes is not possible for you, don’t buy this guide. This guide is for people who plan to speak German, or don’t mind making mistakes as they improve their German quicker for academic/work reasons. Because of this, one of the most important hacks in the guide is outlining which grammar points are less essential for communication and can be returned to later for perfection. This way your energy can be focused on the right things at the right time. I encourage readers of the guide to make mistakes and point out which ones are less serious mistakes.
  • If you are an advanced speaker of German, don’t buy this guide. It is aimed at beginner to intermediate learners who are still struggling with certain parts of grammar and vocabulary. However the concepts of reframing grammar and vocabulary aspects as easy that are shared can be applied to other aspects of German not discussed.
